Root words & Affixes: Cut-and-Paste Tree Activity

$1.00

A printable activity with cut & paste options for teaching about root words and affixes!

Knowledge about root words and affixes can help students learn word meanings and spelling conventions.

Learning about affixes contributes to vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and other literacy skills. Students with good morphological awareness skills can decode and understand unfamiliar words better. When a child can identify root words, prefixes and suffixes, they’ll be better equipped to build new words!

This activity will help students learn how different affixes alter the meaning of root words.

***Make note with your students about the transformation of different TYPES of words - for example, adding the suffix "-ful" to the verb "help" = helpful... now the word is an adjective!

Have them look for patterns, i.e. which affix can connect with which type of word.

What’s in this activity:

  • 2 root + affix tree worksheets (page 3 tree has space for 2 affixes, page 4 = 4 affixes)

  • 1 page brief introductory lesson to Roots and Affixes for your student(s)

  • 1 page of root words,

  • 1 page of affixes.

  • 2-page worksheet for prefix review of re, pre, un

Print, cut, and paste these squares into the trees with your students. There are a few extra blank squares to fill out as you wish for roots or affixes.

You can also print out the trees and just write your own root words and affixes you’d like to use...

OR you can laminate and use velcro if you’d like to prolong the use of the resource - more durable when using with a small group or across multiple sessions!

Root words included are grouped into:

Verbs: act, appear, break, build, care, help, pack, play, tie

Nouns: baby, cloud, friend, fish, hair, oil, sand, toy, tree

Adjectives: bright, clear, clean, happy, kind, mad, quick, sad, soft

Affixes included are:

Prefixes: pre-, re-, un-, mis-, non-, dis-, over-

Suffixes: -s, -ing, -ed, -ly, -er, -est, -ful, -less, -ness, -able, -ish
