Registered Speech-Language Pathologist
Welcome! While you are here, I hope to “Claire-ify” some of your questions about speech and language development (and I sincerely hope you appreciate a play on words as much as I do).
I am a registered speech-language pathologist and the owner of Speaking Clairely SLP Services. I graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2018 with a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology after earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics at UBC (2016). I am certified with Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) and registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC). I am a full member on the Registered Autism Service Provider (RASP) list.
My experience working with youth in therapy settings began in 2013 as a part-time volunteer at a speech-language clinic while attending university. Soon after, I was hired as a therapy assistant in that clinic – those early learning experiences led me to become the SLP I am today.
In my years of experience as a speech-language pathologist, I have worked with children and youth in a variety of settings, including group therapy, a non-profit clinic, my one-on-one private practice, and an elementary school setting.
I specialize in working with clients aged 1-18 with language delays & disorders, Autism, speech sound disorders, genetic syndromes, ADHD, and more. I have extensive experience with AAC users from ages 3-18.
I have completed further professional development in evidence-based methods including:
o Hanen “More Than Words” – a family-centered approach to support autistic clients and those with social communication differences
o SCERTS program – Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Support: an educational, multidisciplinary framework that addresses core challenges faced by autistic children/persons and their families
o PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) – treatment method for children with motor speech disorders, including childhood apraxia of speech
o Simon Says Program: Myofunctional Therapy – training for speech-language pathologists in orofacial myology
My approach is always individualized, focusing on a client’s strengths, needs, and interests.
As children grow and develop, they face unique challenges in later grades with respect to academic and social functioning. Speech therapy for older clients (ages 7-18) can provide support for academic and executive functioning skills, helping them build independence to target language-based learning challenges. For older children targeting social communication skills, our goals are grounded in neurodiversity-affirming principles. Goals may include a focus on self-advocacy, perspective-taking, problem-solving, setting and respecting personal boundaries, understanding differences in communication styles, interpreting social situations, and learning all about what constitutes healthy relationships with peers and other members of their community.
I also provide services to adults seeking services for vocal hygiene or functional voice challenges.
I’m a native speaker of English and I speak Brazilian-Portuguese as a second language.
I’m here to help you or your loved one thrive on their communication journey!
